Scientific Name: Musophaga violacea

Hatchlings are born with a thick grey down and mature into full coloring by one year. Young birds are ready to fly around thirty days.

  • Size: Weight: 1 to 2 pounds; Length: 20 to 21 inches; Wingspan: 8 to 9 inches
  • Diet: Mainly fruit particularly figs; also leaves, buds, flowers, insects and slugs
  • Habitat: Tropical savannas, wetlands, woodlands and forests
  • Range in the Wild: West Africa, predominately ranging from Senegal through to Nigeria
