Public Utilities

The City of Manhattan's Public Utilities Department provides safe, reliable drinking water and effective wastewater treatment to protect public health. We focus on service reliability, environmental responsibility, and sustainability. We conserve resources, reduce our impact, and keep services affordable and accessible. Through community engagement and education, we promote water conservation and environmental stewardship.

Divisions and Their Functions

Water Supply and Treatment

Manhattan’s primary water source is the Kansas River alluvium. Our 24/7 lime-softening plant treats up to 30 million gallons daily, delivering safe, high-quality water.

Wastewater Treatment

Manhattan’s 24/7 wastewater plant uses advanced biological processes to treat up to 11 million gallons daily, returning clean water to the environment and maintaining the city’s sewer infrastructure.

Wastewater Maintenance

Staff maintain 260 miles of sewer lines and over 5,400 manholes. Each year, they inspect and clean 80+ miles to prevent blockages and backups in public and private lines.

Water Distribution

Staff maintain over 280 miles of water mains, along with valves, hydrants, meters, and pressure controls.

Administration

Admin staff ensure smooth utility operations through management support, compliance, finance, customer service, planning, and data management.
