Asian Small-Clawed Otter

Scientific Name: Aonyx cinereus

This otter communicates with its family by using a vocabulary of at least 12 calls, including greeting, mating, and alarm calls.

Sunset Zoo's resident otters are Abigail (female) and Miracle Max (male).

  • Size: around 2-3 feet in lenghth with a tail that adds 10-14 inches
  • Weight: 6 to 12 pounds
  • Diet: Crabs and other crustaceans, mollusks and frogs
  • Habitat: Wetland systems that have pools and stagnant water
  • Range in the Wild: India, eastward through Southeast Asia up to Palawan and Taiwan and Southern China

Conservation Status

Listed as Vulnerable. Major threat is habitat loss.
